EDWIN H. WOODFORD, who for years was superintendent of White, Corbin & Co., is now the superintendent of the White Corbin division of the U.S. Envelope Company, at Rockville, Tolland county. A native of Avon, Conn., he is a son of Franklin and Cordelia (Hawley) Woodford, and a grandson of Asaph and Almira Woodford; the grandparents were farming people of Avon, where they died. The Woodford family has long been established in Avon and vicinity, and its representatives have been numerous for several generations.

Franklin Woodford was born in 1820, and died July 26, 1899, at the home of his son, Edwin H., in Ellington, where, with his wife, he had come in 1893. The father spent his time until his death with his son and at Naugatuck and Farmington, Conn.; the mother survives and lives with her son, Edwin H. She was born in 1825, and her marriage to Franklin Woodford took place in 1843. They had two children: Eleanor, who married George D. Buck, of the firm of John M. Page & Co., hardware and stove dealers, and lived in Naugatuck, where she died; Edwin H.

Edwin H. Woodford was born May 28, 1849, in Avon, Conn., and when quite young accompanied his parents to Farmington, where he attended the common schools for several years, and was a pupil for a short time at the Williston Academy at East Hampton, Mass. Shortly after leaving school he entered the employ of the Nonatuck Silk Company, at Florence, Mass., starting to learn the silk business in a large factory, where several hundred people were at work. Beginning at the finishing department, he had been at work a year and a half when he was appointed assistant superintendent of the establishment. At the end of three years he resigned his position and returned to his home at Farmington to spend a little time. In 1870 Mr. Woodford came to Rockville and engaged with Belding Bros. & Co., silk manufacturers, as superintendent of the "Department of Finishing," where he remained about two years. He then severed his business relations with this company, returned to Farmington and remained at home about one year. In 1873 he came to Rockville again and entered the employ of White, Corbin & Co., thoroughly learning the business, and eventually became the superintendent of the plant. Through several changes of ownership and management he has continued in this position, and is now the superintendent of White Corbin division of the United States Envelope Company. Mr. Woodford has seen the capacity increase from 400,000 envelopes daily to over 2,000,000 daily.

Mr. Woodford is a Republican; he belongs to Rockville Lodge, No. 18, A.O.U.W. June 12, 1871, he was married to Imogene Corbin, a daughter of Lewis J. and Mary A. (Upham) Corbin. A sketch of Mr. Corbin appears elsewhere. To this marriage was born one daughter, Grace, who is the wife of Thurston Wilcox, and the mother of two children, Margery and Thurston Woodford. Mr. Woodford was married July 1, 1891, to his second wife, Miss Carrie Sprague, daughter of John and Sophronia Sprague, of Hartford. Mr. Woodford resides in a very attractive home situated in Ellington, near the city limits of Rockville.
