Windham County, CT., Revolutionary Pensioners
Donated by Jan Harris

Abbreviations and Explanations:

Cont. (Conn.) means that a man was paid by the United States Government but enlisted from the State of Connecticut.

Cont. and Conn. means that he served with the Continental, also in the State regiments.

Rejected widows’ claims.—Where there is nothing after the name that means that either the soldier did not apply or was rejected. In list
beginning “E” notice is made where soldier was pensioned and the widow alone was rejected.

The service for which a man was pensioned is not necessarily all of the service that he actually performed. Often, from old age, a man neglected to mention part of his service; and again he might be unable after the lapse of years to prove it.

S means survivor’s file; W, widow’s file; and R, rejected file. Often a man was pensioned and the widow’s claim rejected for technical reasons,
she may not have been married before 1794, or not have been a widow at the time of the passage of the act, etc. The case is marked by the last
action, so that most of the cases marked R are really proven claims as far as the soldier is concerned.

BLWt. Means bounty land warrant. Those issued before 1804 are marked first with the number of the warrant; then with the number of the acres granted. Thos issued later are marked first with the number of the warrant, second with the number of acres, third with 55, indicating that the act under which the warrant was issued was passed in 1855. This act allowed children as well as pensioners to obtain land.
