The settlement of New London commenced with the marking out of the town plot and a few rude habitations constructed for temporary use in the year 1645. The government of the town was organized in 1648 & from that date a regular set of records is exact- There is no death registered until about 1652, but from incidental sources it is ascertained that two of the first body of planters died in the earlier part of the same year, whether here or elsewhere is uncertain. (Miss. Caulkins).

                               Bradstreet in his Journal gives "May 1" as the date of her
                        death:   on the town records written by her husband is "April
                        30." Bradstreet says: "She was a woman of great worth &
                        died very comfortably in Christianity."

          Nov  5 or 6  John Lamb, killed by being drawn in a mill-wheel - lived

                       malignant boy, who was executed for his crime at Hartford ,

          Sep 23  George, son of George Chappell, - 12 days.
                       Joseph, son of Hugh & Jane Hubbard, born & died in November.

      In the early part of this year Thomas Stanton, an early grantee of New London -
      died at his residence near Pawticket river.

                       He was married the 14th day of May preceding to Agnes Way.
          Oct   4  John Smith-"One of ye deacons of this church a man of great
                        piety and use in church and town - went to heaven."
                                   (Bradstreet's Journal).

1680  Jan    6  (16769/80) - Hester, wife of John Prentice, about 45 years. "She
                         was a pious woman, of sweet nature and an excellent neighbor."
          May 26  Matthew Waller - 63 years.
          Oct  21  Matthew Beckwith - senior - accidentally killer - about 70 years.

1681  Jul     5  Martha - 2nd wife of Clement Minor.
          Aug       Jonathan, - son Capt. James Avery, - 22 yrs,
                        Christopher, son of the same, - probably died this year, or the year

Sept. 24, 1745.    A sloop from Surinam arrived with news that Henry & Joseph
Truman who sailed in her both died in Surinam. The sloop was absent about
eleven months.
