Descendants of Thomas Smith

Some researchers have erroneously combined the data of Dr Henry Smith of Stamford with that of Rev Henry Smith of Wethersfield.

Hannah Smith, wife of Caleb Knapp, did not die in 1685! It was her step-mother, Anne (?????)(Andrews) Smith, who died at that time. Hannah, wife of Caleb Knapp is mentioned in the Will of her father in Jul 1687, but not mentioned in the Will of her second husband, Thomas Lawrence, Jr. Thus she died between 4 Jul 1687, the date her father died & dated his Will and 1691, when Thomas Lawrence, Jr made his Will in which he mentions his step-son, John Knapp, but not his wife, Hannah.

Anne (?????)(Andrews) Smith, was not the daughter of Giles Smith as many early writings are want to claim.

Generation No. 1

1. Thomas Smith1 was born in (of) Hadleigh, Co Middlesex, EN, and died in [prob] Hadleigh, Co Middlesex, EN. He married Ann Sayer 12 August 1608 in Hadleigh, Co Middlesex, EN.

Child of Thomas Smith and Ann Sayer is:
+ 2 i. Henry Smith, born Abt. 1619 in St Mary-Adermanbury, London, Co Middlesex, EN; died Abt. 04 July 1687 in Stamford, CT.

Generation No. 2

2. Henry Smith (Thomas)2,3,4 was born Abt. 1613 in St Mary-Adermanbury, London, Co Middlesex, EN, and died Abt. 04 July 1687 in Stamford, CT5,6,7. He married (1) Unknown [Ann Jackson?] Bef. 1642 in [prob] Boston, Suffolk Co, MA. He married (2) Anne8 Bef. 1674 in Stamford, CT.

Notes for Henry Smith: While no proof positive exists for the name of his first wife, circumstantially it is quite possible that she is Ann Jackson, who came to America [of record 27 Jul 1635] on the ship "Princess", along with (a) Henry Smith; he age 22; she age 23. The age of 22 for Henry Smith of the ship "Princess" equates to a birth year of about 1613, the probable birth year of Henry Smith in this writing. In the absence of a verifiable source for this theory, Ann Jackson is placed in this writing, but with question.

It is expected he may be one and the same person as Jonathan, but this is nothing more than conjecture. As far as can be determined by extant records, Caleb had ten children as indicated in this report.
11 ii. John Knapp45, born 25 July 1664 in Stamford, CT46; died 07 April 1749 in Stamford, CT. He married (1) Hannah Ferris47 10 June 1692 in Greenwich, CT48. He married (2) Martha Mead49,50 21 December 1727 in Stamford, CT. John Knapp and his second wife, Martha, are buried near "Widow's Row", behind and West of New Summer Street [between Broad & Main], behind the "Old Trowbridge Estate". In 1911, Martha (Mead) Knapp's headstone was being used as a coal chute cover on the east side of the estate. John's headstone was uncovered by some construction workers, in 1890-1895, while repairing the local water drainage system. The stone of John Knapp reads "Here lies interred, the body of Captain John Knapp, who departed this life the 5th day of April 1749, aged 85 years." Whereabouts of these stones are unknown at this writing. His second wife, Martha was not a "Weed or Wead" daughter as is found in earlier writings, nor was she a widow at marriage as is also stated in some earlier writings.
